PEI stands for porcelain enamel institute, and it is the rating system used to rate the hardness of a tile’s glaze.

• NR: Natural stone or unglazed tiles that are not rated at all.
• Group 1: This tile is approved for use on residential walls, but not suitable for floors or areas with foot traffic.
• Group 2: This tile is approved for use in areas with light foot traffic like residential bathrooms
• Group 3: This tile is suitable for residential and light commercial areas like kitchens, commercial offices, reception areas, and anywhere in homes.
• Group 4: Approved for all residential use, medium commercial use, and light industrial use like restaurants, hotels, and other commercial areas with moderate foot traffic.
• Group 5: Suitable for heavy foot traffic in areas like airports, schools, and malls.

Most glazed tiles are relatively scratch-resistant, but porcelain tile is even more so. If you’re looking for tiles that are more scratch-resistant, then we recommend looking at tiles that have a higher PEI.

It really depends on your tile. If you have delicate, more expensive tile, it’s probably best to install cabinets first to prevent tile from being damaged during the cabinetry process or when installing appliances.
